So... it has been about five days since we have been here in Mombasa. We have really enjoyed our stay so far! Everyone is so friendly. We are staying with the minister of the church and his family. His name is Paul and his wife's name is Phanyce. They have three children, Alpha, Bill, and Christian. They have been taking great care of us. I just can't get over how grateful and welcoming the people are here.
Everything is so different here. On wednesday we went on one of the public buses to get to town. I have never been on such a crazy ride in my life! The clothing here is very different also, along with gender roles. The women mostly wear dresses and the men are most definitely in charge of almost everything, although the women are still respected. It's a bit old fashioned. We haven't been able to have an actual shower since we've been here, we just wash using a basin of water. And, we have to use a bucket of water to flush the toilet most of the time. Michael was lucky enough to get a toilet with a toilet seat at his house, Alice and I weren't as fortunate :)
The first day we were here(wednesday), we had our information meeting with our readers and completely filled up our schedules, so it was very successful. On thursday and friday we had many readers all day, and we started to get into our routine. Things have been going very smoothly. As the days have gone by we have gotten to know some of our readers a little better. I think we are going to make some great friends.
Saturday was our "day off", so we decided to see some of the tourist attractions in Mombasa. First we went to Fort Jesus. It was a very old fort that was used to defend Mombasa from sea and land attacks a very long time ago. The fort had many old artifacts and it was very interesting to learn about. After that we went shopping and to the beach. At the beach we went on a boat with glass in the bottom to look at some coral. It was a very fun day!
We miss you all so much! But God is taking care of us and we are having a good time!
